Interestingly, a relatively large number of rock & roll artists of the

1950s recorded church music, including Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis,

Wanda Jackson. Some even became ministers Little Richard, Ken

(Kenneth) Copeland, Pat Boone, Jimmy Clanton, with more or less

success. One of the very successful preachers is Chico Holiday,

who moved and influenced many people with his performances and

religious recordings. Even though he is now widely known as a

minister, he has never forgotten his roots as a rock & roll singer and

teen idol.

Chico Holiday, was born Ralph Vergolino in Waukesha, Wisconsin

in 1934.

In 1955 he teamed up with the sister duo “The Rainbow Sweethearts”,

with whom he recorded his first record “Braveland Boogie / Why Am I

So Blue Without You” for the small Wisconsin label Star (1007) as

Chico Verlin. He then signed with the two successful producers Hugo

& Luigi and RCA Records.

“Young Ideas” sold 750,000 records and charted in the Spring of 1959

on the Hot 100.It was also successful in Canada, reaching number 17.

The record was released in other countries such as England, Australia,

Argentina, New Zealand, Germany and Italy. He recorded some

Rockabilly like “I Believe, I Believe; Please Don´t Touch; What Did I

Do” and some Teen Rock & Roll for a variety of labels.

In the spring of 1961, he composed  and recorded “God, Country and

my Baby”. Johnny Burnette's version on Liberty Records (55379)

reached number 18 in the US charts.

In the 1960s and 70s he worked a lot in the lounges of Las Vegas,

Tahoe and Reno often entertaining some famous people at Dean

Martin´s places. Due to his wife, he became interested in religion and

soon began to perform Christian music.

He became very popular doing so and recorded several album of this

type.

Here, for the first time, is his secular music compiled.
