From 1957 onwards, the Everly Brothers were among the most popular
rock ‘n’ roll artists in the world. So it was little wonder that other
record companies were also interested in duos that could appeal to the
teenage market.
Two of the lucky ones were William David ‘Billy’ Cosby (b. 10 September
1940), and Bobby Region Johnson (b. 18 November 1937. The two
met in 1951 and soon they began playing and singing in the neighbour-
hood and at school events.
Bobby composed a song entitled ‘Goodbye, She's Gone’ and they
signed with Spangle Records before the major company RCA took
over. Then on the 9 November 1957 Billboard featured their record
in the ‘Spotlight’ section. It read, ‘The Kids have an Everly Brothers' sound
and could register huge disc appeal. ‘Teen’ is a rockabilly that is given a
vigorous rendition.’ In early 1958, ‘Goodbye, She's Gone’ made the top
ten in several local markets. RCA also released the record in England,
Germany, Canada and New Zealand and some follow up recordings.
A few more Sprouts records followed and two releases as Bobby & Billy
Kidd, before they joined Country Star Tex Ritters band for several years.
Bobby Johnson in the future would also record under his own name and
successful as Bob and Ray.
They began leading normal lives as a truck driver and a police officer, but
occasionally played live with various bands.
It was not until 1979 that Bobby and Billy teamed up to make a final record
as The Sprouts, a song about the US President Jimmy Carter, for which he
thanked them.
They recorded some fine Rockabilly and Rock & Roll along with Country
songs from the heart which are compiled here for the first time.
