There has been some confusion over the years regarding Bill Sherrell and Billy Sherrill. They were usually considered to be one and the same artist, with misspellings. It is now clear that they are two different artists. Bill Sherrell a rockabilly musician from Indiana and Billy Sherrill, the rock & roll musician from Alabama who would become one of country music's most successful producers.

BILL SHERRELL who was born October 5, 1939 outside of Indianapolis, Indiana. He grew up in the Bloomington, Indiana area and became hooked on music at an early age and started learning to play guitar and possibly drums. As a teenager he natuarally was taken by the new sound that was sweaping the country Rock and Roll and soon he decided to start his own record company “Tyme” in 1957. Released in January 1958, “Cadillac Baby” and Teen Town Hop” in later years, became a much sought after record among the rockabilly collectors, as most of his releases. The sales must have been good enough for Bill to put out another one in mid 1958 “Rock On Baby/Rock And Roll Teenager” including two of his hottest guitar rockabilly sides. He kept releasing several more records on his label before he disappeared from the music scene. He sure was a Kool Kat back in the 1950s.

BILLY SHERRILL

The word genius is bandied about far too often but Billy Sherrill was a genius. Sherrill was a producer, an engineer, a musician, a songwriter, and label executive, his artists constantly hit the country charts and he was fairly prolific at crossing over to find success in the pop charts.

William Norris Sherrill, born Nov. 5, 1936, in Phil Campbell, Alabama. Sherrill was the son of an evangelist preacher. As a child, he learned to play piano and frequently performed at his father's revival meetings. In 1956 he joined Benny Cagle and The Rhythm Swingsters playing everything from square dance music to actual pop songs.  Before long he and soon to be famous Rick Hall had formed their own group, The Fairlanes, and began writing songs together. In late 1959 it was time for Billy to have his own record released “Hear Her Rave On / Lonesome Just For You” (SEE 1005). Billy Sherrill became another chance the following year and recorded two self composed songs for the Mercury record company “Like Making Love / Rules Of the Game”

Although he was briefly signed as a solo artist to labels in the late '50s and 60s, he mainly concentrated on performing and songwriting. Around 1962 Billy rejoined with Dan Penn and went out on the road with his band “Danny & The Nomads” as their sax player.

Sherrill moved to Nashville in 1962 after receiving a royalty check in the mail and learning that an unknown Country artist had recorded one of his songs and got this check for $4,000. Sam Phillips from SUN Records hired him for his Nashville Studio as a producer and then he got him a job with Epic Records as A&R man.”

The 1965, he achieved his first big success when David Houston hit No. 3 and one year later, with "Almost Persuaded" (also co-written by Sherrill) which spent nine weeks at No. 1 and was recognized with three Grammy Awards in 1966. The song soon became a standard and was recorded more than 100 times by artists as diverse as Louis Armstrong, Merle Haggard, and Etta James, among others.

In 1966, Sherrill discovered Tammy Wynette. Under Sherrill's production, Wynette' launched a string of Top 10 hits. Sherrill brought Wynette's then-husband George Jones to Epic in 1971 and produced his solo albums for nearly two decades. At this point, Sherrill had become one of the most reliable hitmakers in Nashville. Throughout the '70s, he either produced, wrote songs (or both) for a wide variety of artists including Johnny Cash, David Allan Coe, Janie Fricke, Johnny Paycheck, Marty Robbins, Johnny Rodriguez, Joe Stampley, Tanya Tucker, Bobby Vinton, Andy Williams,Charlie Rich, Barbara Mandrell and more.

In 1980, he was named Vice President/Executive Producer of CBS Records Nashville. He has 84 BMI Awards (66 Country, 17 Pop, and 1 R&B), more than any other Country songwriter. In 1999, Sherrill was named the BMI Country Songwriter of the Century.

Along the way he produced over fifty number one singles and dozens of platinum and gold albums and earned himself a wheelbarrow full of awards, including 3 Grammys. Ironically, he was never able to produce a big hit for himself.
