The Continentals are a German rock 'n' roll band whose music and sound is rooted in the styles of rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, surf, blues and country rock.

Founded in Munich in January 1980, the group is one of the German neo-rockabilly bands and rock 'n' roll revival bands of the early 1980s. The Continentals have released eleven albums to date and still perform live nationally and internationally.

The Continentals played their first gigs in the Schwabing music clubs of their home town Munich. This was followed by concerts in Germany, France, former Yugoslavia, Russia, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands. In addition, there were studio recordings, radio recordings and various appearances on German television as well as participation in cinema and television films.

Despite varying influences and numerous changes in the line-up, the band around singer and founding member Mike Roth remained true to their style. The roots can be heard on the albums as well as live. While the band was originally involved with the classic Kings of Rock 'n' Roll such as Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins, the Stray Cats, Shakin' Stevens, Robert Gordon as well as British neo-rockabilly bands or psychobilly bands like Crazy Cavan & the Rhythm Rockers, Matchbox and the Meteors joined the band in the early 80s. During the years 1989 to 1991, when the Continentals albums Pink Cadillac and Oh Baby Doll were recorded, the band discovered country rockers such as the Kentucky Headhunters or rocker Dave Edmunds. Since the album Heartbeat (1998) a touch of Texas Blues, as played by the Vaughan brothers and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, is clearly noticeable. As the album progressed, Chris Isaak, Link Wray, The Mavericks, Dwight Yoakam and thus the soundtracks of Quentin Tarantino movies increasingly played a role in the Continentals' musical development. Since 2005, the band's repertoire has drawn on songs from the 50s, 60s and their own compositions - supplemented by stylistically arranged covers from the musical modern era (from Billy Idol to Deep Purple - to Depeche Mode and U2 songs).

The Continentals won first prize at the Buddy Holly Song Contest 1996 in Hamburg and second place at the Country Music Awards (CMA) 2009 in the category Country Rock in Pullman City. The band toured several times as support band for the US stars Wanda Jackson, Frankie Ford, Buddy Knox, Janis Martin and Vince Everett. The Continentals played as openers for the Spider Murphy Gang, Bill Haley's Comets, Buddy Hollys Crickets, The Rattles and Tony Sheridan.

Edward James Cooley (April 15, 1933 – April 15, 2020) was an American R&B singer and songwriter, who co-wrote the much-recorded song "Fever." He also had a US pop hit in 1956 with "Priscilla," credited to Eddie Cooley and the Dimples.

Cooley was born in Atlanta, Georgia, later moving to New York City, where he befriended singer and songwriter Otis Blackwell. Around 1955 he contacted Blackwell with an idea for a song he had written, "Fever." According to Blackwell, Cooley said to him: "Man, I got an idea for a song called 'Fever,' but I can´t finish it." Blackwell finished writing the song, and it was recorded by Little Willie John, becoming an R&B #1 hit in 1956, and later being recorded by Peggy LeeElvis PresleyMadonnaBeyoncé, and many others.

Cooley and Blackwell continued to collaborate on songs for musicians on the King label, including The 5 Royales and Joe Tex. Later in 1956, Cooley presented a song, "Priscilla," to singer Boyd Bennett, who turned it down. A demo version reached Teddy Reig of Royal Roost Records, and he arranged for Cooley to record it with a backing trio of girl singers, The Dimples – Beverly Coates, Carolyn Coates and Barbara Sanders – who Blackwell had discovered. The record was "something of an anomaly: a black man performing in a rockabilly style. It was promoted by DJ Alan Freed, and after first becoming successful on the east coast rose up the national charts, reaching #20 on the Billboard pop chart in November 1956. Although Cooley was not primarily a singer, he promoted it by touring.

Eddie Cooley and the Dimples recorded several further singles for the Royal Roost label, but none were successful. He then returned to songwriting, and his songs were recorded by the female R&B singer Tiny Topsy ("Aw! Shucks, Baby"), and by Buzz Clifford and Conway Twitty. In 1959, he made his last recordings, for Herb Abramson's Triumph label, but again they were unsuccessful. In the early 1960s, after Blackwell had had continued success as a songwriter for Elvis Presley, in particular, he approached Cooley to contribute tracks to the album We Wrote 'Em, We Sing 'Em. Cooley performed "Fever" and "Lay It On" on the album, released by MGM in 1961.

He died at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Mississippi on April 15, 2020, his 87th birthday.  He we have collected his complete recorded work.

This is the first ever compilation of Gene Davis who has laid down some

great rockabilly & country tracks plus who led a band that is still spoken

about on the west coast of America in almost reverential tones. He

recorded some great boppin hillbilly songs for King Records in the mid

1950s, before he moved to California and started playing rockabilly.

Under the name of Bo Davis he recorded some great rockabilly songs

backed by legendary Eddie Cochran. More rocking recordings like

“Curfew” , “No Rockin & Rollin” followed and soon he was discovered

by Buck Ram to appear with his band in some movies like “Carnival

Rock” and “Rock All Night” under the name of The Blockbusters. The

talented singer and guitar player Gene Davis soon became the house

band for the famous LA club The Palomino backing many big names.

His band over the years included several soon to be stars. This album

includes all of his rocking sides, some country boppers, some duets

with Chuck Miles, Faron Young,The Collins Kids, Glen Campbell, Eddie Cochran

and finishes with his only chart success “Oh Those Texas Woman”.

Part 2 in our series Bill Haley & Friends brings you an overview on the "Cowboy" label from Philadelphia, PA. Bill Haley recorded here for his friend, manager and labelowner Jack Howard some of his earliest songs between 1948 and 1949. Other artists on this compilation have more or less close connections to the early musical life of Bill Haley including first cover songs of Haley compositions. If you wanna hear what the Daddy Of Rock & Roll did before he "founded" a new musical style , you´re in the right place. The album was even nominated for a Grammy in the category "Historical Recordings".
